Verliege by Micheal Rivers

Genre: supernatural political thriller

CAN YOU BARGAIN WITH THE DEAD? "Sometimes the terror is in what is not said..." The world of Adrian Bolt shattered as his wife lay butchered on the floor of Castle Verliege. His conviction by a German court was as swift as the sword that killed her. He maintained his silence knowing his story would not be believed. Though his reputation was impeccable there was nobody willing to stand for him. Another world lay in wait for anyone living within the walls of the castle; waiting, watching for eternity to keep the Mueller name upon its registers. There is only one world here for those who choose to stay. To enter its doors...is an invitation into the unknown!

Excerpt:
“One afternoon I came back from the battlements and went into the ballroom to take some pictures. I was in the process of writing another book and wanted to do the entire project about the castle. Alicia was standing in the middle of the ballroom, dressed as if she was actually attending a formal ball. I stood back beyond one of the stone pillars and snapped a few pictures. She began to dance as I had never seen her dance before. Doctor, my wife was blessed with two left feet when it came to dancing. That afternoon she was as graceful as a swan.
“At dinner she was dressed as usual in her casual clothing, but the smell of Parisian perfume was still strong in the air.
“You might think this was not unusual. But Alicia did not wear perfume! She had not owned any perfume through all of our years of marriage. She was highly allergic to cosmetics of any kind. I mentioned I liked her perfume and she flew into a rage. She swore to me that she was not wearing perfume. Alicia also swore she had not been in the ballroom earlier in the day.
“I had the photographs developed the following morning. It was my intention to prove to her that she had lied to me. The photographs were very clear: Alicia was in the ballroom, and yes, she was dancing—in the arms of a very handsome man dressed in early-eighteenth-century clothing! The pictures also gave me a full view of a large orchestra behind them next to the oversized fireplace. The man who had processed the photographs was impressed with the accuracy of the costumes the people were wearing in the pictures.
“Imagine my shock when I knew I had witnessed only one person in the ballroom. In the photographs there were people along the walls and beyond, everywhere. As I said, there was no mistaking what the pictures were showing—they were too clear.
“My hands began to tremble when I held the pictures closer. It was not possible! In my mind I was fully aware of what I had seen, regardless of what the photographs were showing. I started to question my sanity.
“Correct me if I am wrong, but by now you are assuming I was going totally mad. Nothing could be farther from the truth, I assure you. I returned to the ballroom after taking the pictures and found a thin layer of dust where the room had not been cleaned as of yet. Greta said the ballroom had not been entered in over six months due to the roof being repaired in that section of the castle. There were no footprints or any signs of anyone being there next to the columns where I took the photos. I walked across the floor toward the fireplace and could see every step I had taken. REVIEW BY MAC ROME OF THE LEGACY OF THE REDCAPE WOMEN!

Here’s a review of Zerlina Valinski's The Legacy of the Redcape Women from Crimson Frost Books.

I was drawn to this book between the gorgeous cover and the blurb. It seemed pretty apparent that it was a new, sexy play on the Red Riding Hood story, and I love stories that put new spins on myths, legends and fairy or folk tales.

I don't want to spoil too much of Valinski's story, but I will say the concept works from beginning to the all-too-immediate end, and left me wanting to read the next book. The characters of Tasia Redcape and Conall McKnight are powerful, visceral and vibrant. I also appreciate the importance of the red cape from which the family takes its name.

I’ve always felt Red Riding Hood was one of the least fairy-oriented “fairy tales.” Only the talking wolf moves it into the realm of magic. But there’s no lack of magic in Valinski’s story

We only begin to understand what Tasia has gotten/been born into by the end of this story, but it's already clear she's bound for great challenges. I suspect Conall will be nearby ... very nearby ...

I recommend The Legacy of the Redcape Women. It's a terrific little book. I give it 5 stars.

The Witch and the Werewolf, the follow-up to this story, is coming soon from Crimson Frost Books. I’ll be watching for it.

THANKS FOR THE GREAT REVIEW!

GET READY TO READ THIS TEASER... THE START TO THE SERIES OF IMMORTAL PASSIONS!

The Legacy of the RedCape Women by Zerlina Valinski

When Tasia discovers her ancestry is tied to the mountains of North Carolina, she's shocked but elated. Finally, she thinks she may have found what she's missed all her life...family. Reaching her ancestral home however, leads her into the path of an Alpha shifter...and secrets some never want revealed.

Conal is the Alpha wolf, and the local law, still more than his interest is peaked when he sees the bedraggled woman sitting in his spot. He feels torn over leading her to her grandmother's home...is this the beginning of their story? Or will the past destroy their future?

Excerpt:

The door swung open and in stepped the biggest man Taisa had ever seen. The plaid button down shirt he wore clung to his broad shoulders.  He raked the wet hair back from his forehead, his clothes soaked.  His dark gaze swept the room before landing on her.
“Who’s he?” Tasia gulped down her water. Her unease was swiftly back.
“He’s our Al…Sheriff.  He eats here every night and you’re in his spot.”
“Oh. Should I move?”
“Don't let him bluster you too bad, he's a nice guy. I’ll be back with your dinner.”  Julia was out of the booth before the Sheriff reached them.  Tasia was sure Julia was escaping something, but she just couldn't figure out what.
“You’re sitting in my spot.” The bear of a man towered over her.  His voice was so deep it vibrated through her.  “Who the hell are you anyway?  Is your car parked out front?  In my spot, I might add.”
“Well, one of the cars is mine, not sure where your spot is though.”
“The one with a hungry dog in the back seat.”
“I’ll take care of her when I’m done eating.  You don’t need to worry.  She’s well loved.”
“I guess, I can smell the dog all over you.”  He made a sniffing sound then glared at her.
“Right.  Listen, I’ll move as soon as I eat my meal.  But, you’re welcome to sit across from me.  If you can stand the dog smell.” She grinned up at him.  Tasia felt challenged, she did not like it.  She was never one to cower when her ire was up.   Foster care had taught her to be tough, resilient.  Although, this man made her feel dwarfed, but her instinct told her not to flinch.  When you flinch, you’re vulnerable.   I’m an idiot.  I should get out of his way.  She leaned her neck back to look up at him.  “Go ahead, have a seat.” She motioned to the other side of the booth.  “We can share.  I don’t bite.  And if I smell like a dog.  I have been traveling all day with Bella, a she’s a German shepherd.  She can’t help how she smells.”
“You don’t bite?”  He chuckled, the brusque manner fading.  “To bad.” He scooted into the bench across from her with the lithe grace of a wolf.
